i love Monkey! Is an exploration of the relationship between the consumer and the cute objects of their consumption. These miniature rooms are a glimpse into my imagined cute dystopia, where the cute monkey character Monkey has been engineered and marketed into every aspect of our lives for consumers to buy. While characters like Monkey are almost cruelly manipulated into their cute, weak form to be owned and loved by us, Monkey’s special power is his demand for love, which can be used to sell almost anything. However, real life is not cute, the patterned walls stained, the product packaging rubbish piling up, in a failed reconciliation between reality and fantasy. The work invites the audience to envision a world not too different from ours, where cuteness as the tool of capitalism and consumerism has led to total world domination.
